ChatGPT at a glance
ChatGPT is the most popular AI chatbot worldwide — built by OpenAI, publicly available since November 2022, now with over 200 million weekly users. Scope ranges from drafting copy to code analysis to image generation — and Plus users also get Voice Mode, Canvas and a growing Custom GPT marketplace.
Three years in, ChatGPT is less a single product than an ecosystem: web app, native macOS and Windows clients, mobile apps, an open API, and a growing roster of semi-autonomous agent features. When evaluating ChatGPT, it pays to think of the whole stack rather than just “the chat” — the leverage often comes from how the pieces connect.
Models in 2026
The model family is more differentiated in 2026 than ever, and not entirely self-explanatory for newcomers:
- GPT-4o is the everyday multimodal flagship: faster than GPT-4 Turbo, with image, audio and video understanding in a single model.
- GPT-4 Turbo remains the default for long, demanding text with a 128k-token context window.
- o3 (reasoning) is the new generation of “thinking” models — slower, but noticeably more precise on math, logic and multi-step tasks. For complex code refactors or scientific argument, o3 is often the only reasonable choice.
- GPT-3.5 still ships in the Free plan as a legacy option, but it is hard to recommend for serious work in 2026.
In Plus, you switch models per conversation. A simple working rule: GPT-4o as default, o3 reserved for genuinely hard problems — because each o3 reply easily takes 30 seconds to several minutes.
Plans
- Free: GPT-3.5, limited access to GPT-4o and image generation.
- Plus — $20/month: GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-4o, o3, DALL·E 3, file uploads, Custom GPTs, Voice Mode, Canvas.
- Team — $25/user: like Plus + shared workspace, no training-data opt-out needed, admin console.
- Enterprise — from ~$60/user: SSO, audit logs, unlimited access, individual DPA, data residency.
When is Plus worth it?
For anyone using ChatGPT at least two hours a day for professional work. The combination of GPT-4 Turbo, image generation and Custom GPTs usually pays off within weeks. Individual features like the Code Interpreter (Advanced Data Analysis) replace external tools entirely — what used to be a pandas script for a CSV crunch is now a file upload and a two-sentence brief.
Custom GPTs and Projects
The Custom GPTs marketplace has matured considerably since 2024. Instead of a flood of generic bots, the visible layer is now dominated by curated specialists: a Custom GPT for SQL queries with built-in schema briefing, one for tax law sources, one for pitch-deck reviews. Builders can attach private knowledge bases since 2025 without that data ending up in OpenAI’s training corpus.
Projects layers persistent workspaces on top: park your documents, style guides or code snippets in a Project once, and every conversation inside it picks them up automatically. For recurring work — client communication, newsletter editing, code reviews on a specific codebase — that removes the constant re-briefing at the start of each session.
Workflow integration: API, Voice Mode, Canvas
ChatGPT only becomes truly productive outside the browser chat. The API is the standard for custom integrations — Slack bots, internal knowledge search, backend agents. Pricing sits well below comparable self-hosted setups, and the SDKs for Python, Node and Go are solidly maintained.
Voice Mode has become noticeably more natural since 2025: imperceptible latency, real interjections and interruptions work, and multilingual recognition handles strong accents surprisingly well. For commute-time memos and verbal research, that easily reclaims an hour a week.
Canvas is OpenAI’s response to Anthropic’s Artifacts: a side panel for interactive editing of text, code or task lists — Claude users will recognise the pattern, but the implementation is genuinely independent. For longer writing projects, Canvas usually beats the linear chat log because you get revision-based editing.
GDPR and the European angle
For commercial use in Europe, the rule of thumb is simple: in Free and Plus, prompts feed into OpenAI’s training corpus by default unless you explicitly opt out. Team and Enterprise rule out training contractually, and OpenAI provides a DPA for both. EU data residency is available in the Enterprise tier, partially in Team — as of May 2026.
Anyone processing personal or sensitive data should still run a data protection impact assessment. That applies to every cloud AI, not just OpenAI.
When an alternative fits better
For long documents and nuanced writing, Claude has the edge — the larger context window and a frequently more precise prose style show up clearly in side-by-side tests. For research with verifiable sources, Perplexity is the smarter choice; ChatGPT’s browsing works, but Perplexity sells citation transparency as the headline feature. And anyone living deep inside Google Workspace will find the natural integration into Drive, Docs and Gmail in Gemini.
Many professionals run two or three tools in parallel and pick per task class — that is rarely more expensive in 2026, and almost always more effective than hunting for a single silver bullet.

Frequently asked questions
What does ChatGPT cost?
The basic version is free. ChatGPT Plus with GPT-4 models, image generation and file uploads costs USD 20 per month. Business and Enterprise plans start at $25/user.
Is ChatGPT legally usable in Germany?
Yes. For commercial use with personal data, Business or Enterprise plans with a DPA are the GDPR-compliant choice.
What are the best ChatGPT alternatives?
Anthropic's Claude (better context, more nuanced style), Google Gemini (Workspace integration, video input) and Perplexity (research with citations) are the strongest alternatives right now.
